Treatment
There is no cure for HIV but there are treatments available that aim to extend the length and quality of life.
Learning about treatment options can be overwhelming but you have support. We can walk you through options for treatment, specialists and other health services so you can decide what’s best for you. HIV medication is strong and have side effects over time, everybody is different and may have different reactions. For these reasons treatment may not be something you want to begin right away and this is your decision. There are other ways to keep your immune system healthy such as eating well, exercising and managing stress.
Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) is the main type of treatment for HIV. It is not a cure, but it can prevent the weakening the immune system for years extending the quality and length of life. ART consists of drugs that have to be taken every day for life, which can have varying side effects.
At times, it may be neccessary to take more than one antiretroviral drugs at once, this is called combination therapy. When several drugs are taken in combination, the approach is called Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy, or HAART.
