Living with HIV/AIDS

If you are living with HIV or have been recently diagnosed, know that you are not alone and have options for treatment, support and care. At ASAAP, we can connect you with doctors, support counsellors and specialists that work with you to stay healthy.

Living with HIV can have a significant impact on your life, but it does not mean that you cannot live a fulfilling and long life. Get in touch with us and we can work together to support you in navigating the health options available.

ASAAP recognizes that access to HIV information and services are sometimes framed by cultural context. HIV/AIDS is still highly stigmatized in our families & communities and we take our clients’ right to privacy very seriously. Your information will remain confidential. Only if you need, we can talk to your family or partner about any related issues they may face.

We provide services in South Asian languages such as Hindi, Tamil, Urdu, Punjabi, Gujarati and Bengali. If you require service in a different language please contact us.

ASAAP staff can assist with:

  • Finding a doctor or HIV specialist and accompanying you with visits
  • Accessing Ontario Disability Support Program, Ontario Works and other programs
  • Individual counselling around HIV/AIDS related issues
  • Referrals and follow-up with partner agencies serving South Asians for legal, housing, employment, immigration, pre-natal and health services
  • Treatment information and options
  • Health promotion and education
  • Emergency financial assistance (dependent on fundraised dollars)

We believe in creating a community of support and do this through:

  • Monthly social support groups
  • An annual healing retreat
  • Holiday and other social events
  • Anti-stigma campaigns that target South Asian communities

Resource Development:

We develop and distribute relevant educational materials in South Asian languages on various HIV/AIDS related topics including complementary therapies, HIV/AIDS treatments, nutrition, holistic health and self-care.

Community Capacity:

People living with HIV are involved with ASAAP at multiple levels, as volunteers, staff and board members. Through Greater and Meaningful Involvement of People living with HIV (GIPA/MIPA) ASAAP grows its capacity to stay relevant to the communities we serve. If you are interested in becoming a board member, member of ASAAP or volunteer please visit our Get Involved page.
